There’s nothing more beautiful than a couple in love. Seems that’s all you need for a great photo. But, the right backdrop allows that relationship to really shine. This is why I take the selection of wedding shooting locations SO seriously. The setting for your wedding photos matters. And the process to find the best views for your wedding photo can be a total blast. This does not have to be a chore! It’s super exciting. (Can you tell I love this?!) The right background brings an entire vision to life. A well-chosen view brings the esthetic to the photos and helps tell the story. Your wedding photo setting can personalize an experience and provide memories you won’t forget.
I always like to explore and establish the perfect locations for your wedding photos. And I’m happy to take the reins and offer you suggestions or work with you on ideas you have to make that location the best of the best–or some combination of both approaches.
So, when you start looking around for the best views for your wedding photos, keep these five secrets in mind:
1. Draw on experience.
Ask your photographer to suggest locations that would make your particular wedding photos perfect. They have experience with tons of locations throughout the various seasons. Be open to hear about locations your professional might suggest. A great photographer looks for beautiful composition, a pallet and backdrop that can bring your vision to life. Discuss any special moments, looks, and pre-plan your photos with a photographer who gets you.
2. Scout your locations ahead of time.
This may sound more intense than it needs to be. Instead, think of it as “Plan the next three dates at potential ‘best views’ locations”. An excuse for three, or four, or five romantic dates with your sweetheart?! Not all bad. Wedding planning can take a lot of time and energy, but it’s great to continue to nurture your relationship while checking off a few “to do” boxes. Mention “picnic” or “pizza and beer” and I’m guessing you’ll both be on board with scouting a few spots with great views.
3. Consider the location of the sun.
Why do those Hollywood actors always look fantastic? Lighting. The right lighting sure helps and natural light is one of the best. When you’re considering your best views for your wedding photos think about sun placement. Where will it be in the sky? And how does that affect shadows and direct sun?
Is there a time of day that works best to shoot there? When does the sun set at that location? Does the sunset make that simple pasture look epic? Don’t hesitate to send pictures of the locations you’re considering to your photographer. If you’re feeling super dedicated, check out the views morning, afternoon, and at dusk.
4. Anticipate the amount of activity.
Easy tip: simple is best. Some places look great and even feel great because of the energy or variety of colors, but when you add just two people the composition gets really busy.
A simple slate of Sandhills, a clean building, a river, or even a plant-packed nature center is easy. The palette of neutrals allow your relationship to be the spark that pops off the screen. Again, snap some photos of a spot to discuss that particular spot with your photographer.
5. Personalize.
Oh, yes! Let me repeat that, personalize! Personalize your setting to reflect you. Think about what you love. What makes you smile? (Other than your spouse-to-be.) Think about places that are special to the two of you. Places that prompt that big grin, easy laugh, and feeling of comfort and love.
Or what things added to a place make you both happy? Add your favorite hiking boots to hike that gorgeous trail? Your favorite meal to enjoy? Your pet?
When you think of the best views for your wedding day, make sure they are the best views for you two. Feel free to personalize your setting.
The perfect location will set your minds at ease and let your hearts, and your happy, soar! Take your time and feel the freedom to think about (and discuss with your photographer) different options when you plan the best views for your wedding photos.
