Do you find yourself scrolling Pinterest looking for inspiration to make your wedding reception look amazing?! You see these gorgeous reception photos. Couples dancing in the most dreamy settings. The sweetest smiles in crisp light. The warmth of the candlelight glowing in all of the photos. Are you thinking, “How do I get that look?”. I’ll tell ya. You can copy those decorations vase for vase, but the photos will not reflect that dreamy image you saved to your board unless you hire a photographer who knows the secret to epic reception photos.

How do experienced photographers showcase the reception differently? What makes the final photographs so different?

The short answer is: the photographer’s use of light.

There are so many styles of photography these days- and the use of light plays a MAJOR factor in that.

If you set a table at a reception  for 10 photographers, depending on their use of light and ultimate goal, each photo would look different.

One photographer might go for the “fashion look” of direct flash with strong contrast between blacks, whites, and shadows. Another might emphasize the stunning warmth of the candles using off camera lighting. Not to be outdone, one would bounce the light from the ceiling to create an image that is overall lit in the subject area but the rest of the background is dark.

I would harness the light to emphasize the overall aesthetic in a way that shows the cozy glow of your chosen gorgeous lights (string lights, candles, etc.) so you can feel ALL of the emotions exactly as it was- while leaving out the grain. I would enhance the light that is already there by adding soft, natural light.

Light is like make-up. It enhances the beauty of YOU and what you have chosen so carefully to make your guest feel loved. I don’t want to change the way things look completely, or make it look less than what it is. I want to enhance how stunning it already is!

So what are some secrets to guarantee epic reception photos?

1. Get Creative With Off Camera Lighting

I love using my off camera light to emphasize in all areas of the reception. An off-camera light or flash is one not attached to the camera. This offers me more creative lighting options since the flash can be placed in different positions around what I’m shooting. From details, to toasts, to dances. You can count on crisp, real, aesthetically enhancing photos with depth with off camera light. Pairing with my different gear options that I specifically use in special scenarios, I can add different dynamics to create a more powerful image

2. Consider Placement of Certain Reception Spots For Ideal Lighting

I’ve photographed over 200 weddings. So it’s hard not to notice some simple changes that would really improve any reception.

A good one is to have your Head Table on the floor instead of on a stage.

Not only does this make your guests feel more connected to you, but it also gives a much flattering look with light. When you are up higher, lights often look like they are coming straight at you (like a spotlight), making a flat look in your photos. Over the years I’ve found a way to make it look great. My off camera light equipment setup works excellent, but if you have the option–put the table on the same level with your guests.

epic wedding photos involve smart placement of head table, florals, and lighting as bride and groom share head table kiss

On the floor,  your head  table is often surrounded by your family and friends, with so many reactions and emotions to be seen, details to enjoy, and don’t want to miss that! That table location seamlessly folds the head couple and their bridalright into the day, the night, and all of the joy surrounding them..

3. Hang String Lights From the Ceiling

Want to add some more dynamic to your dance photos? Hang some lights and florals from the ceiling to enhance the atmosphere. Not only does it provide light while avoiding cans and fluorescents, it also creates a dreamy backdrop. Intimate and enchanting.

Positioning my off camera lighting just right, I  can enhance the lights behind you so much more than a solo direct flash. The result of the finished photos takes you right back to enjoy those glowy moments forever.

4.  Plan a sunset photo break.

Imagine: it’s 7 p.m., you’ve just finished a delicious dinner, you’re giddy on love and craving a quick break with your new spouse. This is the perfect time for a little “escape” for the happy couple.

It’s the perfect time to capture candid, intimate moments once you’re a little more relaxed. After all, you know you’ve already captured so many great photos with your wedding party — now you get to relax and cuddle up together and take advantage of that sunset lighting and time to process your day.

Even if it’s dark by the time you get a break — there are plenty of fun and creative ways to shoot at night. I have a few favorite light sources for nighttime that really add a fun, sweet element to the photos. This tiny break often refreshes the couple, making the following epic reception photos, with the squad or Dad or the crazy aunts, even better!

5. Add Fire To Your Epic Reception Photos

A super exciting reception photo to capture is one with FIRE! Fire is FUN! Fire gives an energetic and exciting feel to the night–and the photograph. The light of fire is unpredictable and bounces whatever direction it feels.

Think of walking out into sparklers dancing all around. The fire illuminates the excitement and joy on their faces. I can capture that for great reception photos.

Fire can also be used to light up lanterns or campfires- all amazing things to give the client a special experience as well as create amazing photos for them.

I love that a dark night doesn’t stop fun photos. Great photos in the dark just need a little help. A variety of light sources come to your rescue.

No matter what photographic style you are drawn to, know that how a photographer uses light is a massive part of the results you desire. There are so many sweet moments in all parts of your day that need to be captured. But a reception full of warmth and joy is one of my favorites to capture. Let’s go light it up!
